Joomla Plugin: Joomsayer
The plug-in lets you show beautiful quotes on your site. Joomsayer's special
feature is that the layout relies almost completely on style sheets,
and that the quotation marks are shown in the upper left corner and the
lower right corner, regardless of text size, a task that poses serious challenge to most webmasters.A built-in style sheet allows centered, left-aligned, or right-aligned positioning of each quote, and offers customization of colors and text style. (The image to the right is an actual screenshot of Joomsayer in action using a customized style sheet.)
Note that although Joomsayer includes a built-in stylesheet enabling you to start quickly, familiarity with style sheets is required in order to take full advantage of the plug-in.
Get the plug-in here: plugin_joomsayer-0.6b.zip. Note: please do not host this plug-in on your own site, but feel free to link to this blog entry.
This is the official home of the Joomsayer plug-in. Please use the comments for support and suggestions.
Installation Instructions
- Install the plug-in via Joomla's mambot installer by browsing to the Joomsayer zip file that you downloaded, and press the "Upload and install" button.
- Go to the site mambots menu, and publish the plug-in.
- Configure the plug-in's use of style sheets according to your needs; hover the mouse over the configuration parameters for explanations.
Create your quote by inserting a Joomsayer tag in your content as follows:
{joomsay [suffix=class_suffix] [link=url] [Source]}The text that is to be quoted{/joomsay}
This will render "Text that is to be quoted" in a quote box in your content. The box will include the left quote and right quote characters that you enter in the Parameters list on the right.
If the optional Source (plain text) is specified, this will be shown as the source of the quote. If the optional link=url (with an URL to a web page) is specified, the Source is shown as a link to that page.
The optional suffix=class_suffix is used to assign individual styles to the quotes. The default value for class_suffix is "_wrapper", leading to the full style sheet class name 'joomsayer_wrapper' for the outer <div> tag of the quote. Use the style sheets to customize the Joomsayer appearence for your own choice of class suffixes. (Hint: for the built-in style sheet, you may omit the suffix, or set it to suffix=_left or suffix=_right.)
Hint: to create your own style sheet, first specify "built-in" in the style sheet selection in the Parameters list. Then view the source code of the your web page as it appears on the site. The built-in style sheet will be inserted in the <head> section of the web page.
Remember to publish the Joomsayer plug-in.

Unfortunately the zip file was not found in server...
Yes, there appears to be something wrong with the download script. This is rather odd, because it worked fine yesterday, and the file is actually there. I'm looking into this.
It turned out it was a "safe mode" problem. I'll probably never learn why I didn't see this effect yesterday when everything worked fine.
In any event, the file should be available for download now.
I'm not able to download the zip. The error I get says I must be logged in (DEBUG: vs. '1').
But I'd really like to try your extension out!
I can't download the plug-in, while I am logged-in
Hi there,
Having some slight difficulties with joomsayer. Plugin installed and published, copied your example exactly (and also created a quote with just [joomsayer] tags either side.
I just get a grey box for the quote. Is this a CSS issue? I really just wanted exactly the type of quote shown in your example above.
Any advice?
Would love to be able to use this plugin, but the download is broken.
Must be logged in (DEBUG: vs. '1').
Hi, I'm using the Joomlasayer but wanted it inside a module position so I'm using it in conjunction with "mod_contentitem". I created a page with the joomlasayer info in it and then I use mod_contentitem to publish it. Problem is, the joomlasayer quote only shows up with styles when I choose "publish to homepage". So, the quote only appears with style when it's published in the page.
Any ideas? You can see it in action here:

Thanks!

Well guess I'm moving on to the other hundred random quote plugins I found since not only do you require me to login, but you can't even get the script to work right and actually LET ME DOWNLOAD!
Thank you of runderstanding that this is a free plug-in, and that impolite complaints are better suited for services that you have paid for.
I'm not sure what is wrong with the script yet, except that it seems to be related to OpenID, TypeKey, and possibly other remote login services. Unfortunately I haven't been able to locate a (free) plug-in that accomplishes the same task.
I'm a newby and having trouble getting this to work in Joomla 1.5, i installed it OK using the System - Legacy plugin. However when i use the following {joomsay}Test{/joomsay} I just get the following {joomsay}Test{/joomsay} not a nice "Test". Any ideas?
Hello,
I couldn't get this cool mambot work in my site. Mambot is published but when I entered the tags the system doesn't recognize them and treats them just regular text..In the best case I could see tiny quotation mark outside the text but it was not even close to displaying like the one in this page. Any help?
Hi Ole,
Creating pull quotes is a really nice idea; nice way to break up long text without having to search for a relevant photo all the time.
Works fine on my 1.x sites, but not the 1.5 as reported above. Sounds like you have a handle on the solution though, so I'll keep checking back.
Thanks for the great plugin Ole!
Looks like they changed it completely:

Really nice mambot.
Downloaded about an hour ago and had some issues that others were describing above in that it simply would not work for me. So I figured maybe some tags are interfering with it. It looks like either spans or paragraph tags cause it to fail.
There's an easy workaround. Copy your article text into notepad and put your breaks in there, then copy it back and put the joomsay tags in. & Hey presto it works!
Fantastic mambot. Thanks again!
I can't get this to work either on my Joomla 1.5 site. See URL for example. Just shows as plain text.
Looks like a great addition, if it just worked!
Thanks for any assistance in getting this to work in 1.5
I can't get this to work on my Joomla 1.5 site. Just shows as plain text. Tried the technique of copy/pasting into/outof notepad and that didn't help.
Your plugin sounds great. I registered, logged in, but it won't let me download it. Says I need to be logged in, but I already am. Can you fix that? Is there somewhere else to find the download? Thanks for your help.
Cindy
Still can't download the Joomsayer plguin, but would love to try it out... Any news on how to achieve this?
Rob

The download link not works properly, any help me???
Another eager potential user who can't download. I dealt with Movable Type a few years ago and this is exactly why I dumped it. Customer service is not only non-existent, it's obnoxious "this is free so it doesn't have to be good-- or even work." Please get this site fixed or take the damn thing down!
Shame. The plugin doesn't work on my 1.5 site. The download link also doesn't work, so I pulled it from iJoomla. All in all, not a great experience for me, which is a pity, because it looked very good. Oh well.
Hello Yes I like the plugin but.... not working now im using joomla version 1.5.x Any mods about can these be fixed..
yours truly nicking a great script.
The version isn't supported for Joomla v. 1.5.x, and it won't be as I consider Joomla 1.5.x an intermediate step. I hope that some day in the future, Joomla will sport ACL in which case I'll upgrade Joomla and most likely the plug-ins as well.
